It’s the Holiday Season! Strategy #10

Oh boy here it comes ~ the holidays! It is 1 days until Thanksgiving and 30 days until Christmas! It can be a time of hustle, hurry, and unfortunately stress and worry. So between now and then we’re going to be talking about, and share ways to have a happy enjoyable holiday season from now through Thanksgiving and until Christmas. Each day I will share a tip, secret, or simple strategy on how to keep yourself balanced and centered through the holiday season. It will take about 5 minutes a day.

Hello and Welcome back! We are on strategy day 10 and the final day of this collection! Let’s recap our strategies and see how you are doing. Here is what we have so far:

  • Visualize your holiday and what your desired outcome is.
  • Manage the amount of time it will take to create your desired outcome.
  • Stay out of judgement on yourself. Do what you can.
  • Get some rest.
  • Eat good food.
  • Feed your mind positive thoughts.
  • Plan simple activities.
  • Self Management Techniques
  • Get some exercise

And now step 10~ meditation. I have been asked many questions about mediation: “Deanna, how do I meditate?” , “How do I still my mind?”, “When do I find the time?”, “Every-time I meditate I fall asleep, how can I stay awake?’.”

Well there are more techniques out there than I can possibly digest and teach you in a lifetime. And yes, it can be quite puzzling on how and where to start ~ but let’s get you started with a quick, fun, and relaxing meditation that will take you about 3 and a half minutes.

¹

Action Step for today: Use this brief and fun meditation to help you center and balance. I recommend that you keep it close for those moments when you need a breath. If you are already familiar with meditation I highly recommend that incorporate it into your holiday season.

Deep Breath in! Cleansing Breath out! Say to yourself – simple strategies I put in place now will help me to walk in ease and grace, more centered, more balanced.I can do this!

If you are just joining us, here is the link to day one  → Simple Strategy Number One!

I will see you back here tomorrow for a new collection of tips. Be sure and book mark this page so you can find your way back!

Simple Strategies for Relieving Stress During the Holidays! #9

It’s the Holiday Season! Strategy #9

Oh boy here it comes ~ the holidays! It is 2 days until Thanksgiving and 31 days until Christmas!

We are on strategy day nine!

And now step 9~ get some exercise.  “When you exercise, your body produces endorphins, which are the ‘happy’ chemicals in your brain,” says Dr. Abramowitz. “You’ll come back inside with a different mindset.”¹

Yes! Get some exercise. I always find that good brisk walk in the winter can change my mindset and help me to refocus on something else besides the TV, dishes, or internet. I have bundled up myself and my daughter with 3 feet of snow on the ground and shoveled snow. It was amazing how quiet it was outside, how crisp the air felt, and how spectacular making snow angels felt.

You can’t get outside? Okay. Then crank it up and dance in place, move your arms around, or sing a song that will move your heart. Take a no excuses approach and move your physical body. See how it feels! And NO! Holiday shopping does not count as exercise! LOL! But good try!

So step 9 is Get some exercise. The kind that is most perfect for you and that you know in wisdom that you can handle.

Action Step for today: Remember in years past where you felt stressed, anxious, or uncomfortable at a certain point during the holiday festivities or preparations ~ plan ahead to get some exercise at those moments to keep yourself centered and focused. Who knows maybe you will get up and leave the family table to go outside, and the family may follow you with a football, basketball, or Frisbee. You may start something that could be the next family tradition and memory maker! Go for it!

Tomorrow I have a surprise for you . . .it is a free holiday gift for you!It is downloadable and will be worth your while as back up tool for just in case the other 9 strategy steps don’t work. This one will be the ace in hole.

Deep Breath in! Cleansing Breath out! Say to yourself – simple strategies I put in place now will help me to walk in ease and grace, more centered, more balanced.I can do this!

Simple Strategies for Relieving Stress During the Holidays! #8

It’s the Holiday Season! Strategy #8

Oh boy here it comes ~ the holidays! It is 3 days until Thanksgiving and 32 days until Christmas!

We are on strategy day eight! Let’s recap our strategies and see how you are doing. Here is what we have so far:

  • Visualize your holiday and what your desired outcome is.
  • Manage the amount of time it will take to create your desired outcome
  • Stay out of judgement on yourself. Do what you can.
  • Get some rest.
  • Eat good food.
  • Feed your mind positive thoughts.
  • Plan simple activities.

Yesterday in strategy 7  we touched on the relationship dynamic. The holiday season can be awesome, engaging, and even magical! It can be a time to reconnect, share memories, and create new ones. However, it can also be a time of unresolved issues, awkward meet ups, and displaced emotions.  So how can we handle ourselves and engage at this time or year, instead of merely getting through it? Ah that is step  8~ plan self management techniques.

What? Self management techniques. We know ourselves better than anyone else. We know what we can handle and what drives us right around the bend. We know when it is time to engage with others and when it is best to excuse ourselves and decompress. So have a way to do that available that is easy and understandable to others. If you are at someone else’s home ask them if there is a place that you can take a moment to yourself. Perhaps they have a sunroom, or a spare room that you can respite in. If the weather is suitable, going for a walk or sitting outside in the sunshine may be a good place to take a moment to yourself.

Plan ahead to know what your preferred technique is, or have more than one you can pull from. Some ideas are: a basketball to dribble outside, a paperback book, a moment to stretch or lay down, taking a short walk.

It is good to engage in self management technique in place so that you can relax and de-stress as you need to. There is no need to explain yourself – just excuse yourself and take a breath. If you have children remember they may need a respite also. This time of the year can be very over stimulating for you and them.

So step 8 is to have a self management technique in place so you can remain centered and balanced. Know yourself and when it is best for you to take a moment to decompress.

Action Step for today: Decide on three ways to take a moment to yourself. Remember this is a loving action for both yourself and others around you.

Deep Breath in! Cleansing Breath out! Say to yourself – simple strategies I put in place now will help me to walk in ease and grace, more centered, more balanced.I can do this!

Simple Strategies for Relieving Stress During the Holidays! #7

It’s the Holiday Season! Strategy #7

Oh boy here it comes ~ the holidays! It is 4 days until Thanksgiving and 33 days until Christmas!

We are on strategy day seven!

  • Feed your mind positive thoughts

Today we are going to go there ~ yes, the relationship dynamic. The holiday season can be awesome, engaging, and even magical! It can be a time to reconnect, share memories, and create new ones. However, it can also be a time of unresolved issues, awkward meet ups, and displaced emotions. Just know that there may be others at your gathering that are sharing the same feelings, yet will not show it. So what can be done? How can we engage this time or year, instead of merely getting through it? Ah that is step 7 ~ plan simple activities! Yes, this is a time to get creative and put forth the energy toward creating great memories, and offer stress a valve to relieve the pressure at the same time.

So here are some ideas that are simple and fun (and yes will get your families heads out of their cell phones and respective electronic games ~ for my younger readers, we are going to old school it. big smile!).

  • Place a basket in the living room and put inside a deck of playing cards, a jar full of pennies, and instructions for penny poker. Here are a couple of links to get you started http://www.wikihow.com/Play-Penny-Ante and http://www.grandparents.com/grandkids/activities-games-and-crafts/basic-poker. Then make a list of your own rules to add like the winner gets the biggest piece of pie, and the looser has to do the dishes. Remember to keep it fun!
  • Place a basket on the kitchen table with some construction paper, crayons or markers, glue, tape, q-tips, cut up straws, old magazines or colorful advertisements. Invite the kids, both big and small, to create paper placements for the meals. Here is a link on how to make them http://www.auntannie.com/FridayFun/PaperWeaving/. Not your style? Here are some other ideas https://www.care.com/a/17-easy-construction-paper-crafts-that-any-kid-can-do-20150415150506.
  • Play a game of let’s label old family pics. If you have enough time in advance of your gathering ask each person coming to bring pictures of themselves from long ago, or family pictures. If you are having friends over, have them bring some of their own. Then sit together and pass the pictures around sharing memories, and perhaps labeling them, or making a note of some of the family stories. This is a fun way to share the family history and a perfect segue to creating a family photo album.
  • Recipe swap. Have each person coming to your holiday event bring a favorite recipe on a 3 X 5 card, or cut to that size. Then share, swap, or even prepare them together. I have found that cooking together keeps hands busy, and hearts open.

So step 7 is to plan simple activities. If you have old board games at the back of the closet – pull them forward, and have some fun!

Action Step for today: Actively create some simple activities to encourage engagement and interaction. Keep your guest or family in mind and select something they can all be comfortable in doing.

If you have an idea for an activity, please post it in the comments below. I look forward to seeing them!

Simple Strategies for Relieving Stress During the Holidays! #6

It’s the Holiday Season! Strategy #6

Oh boy here it comes ~ the holidays! It is 5 days until Thanksgiving and 35 days until Christmas!

We are on strategy day six and more than half way through! How are you doing? Can you say Whoo-hoo! You are doing great! This is going to be the most awesome holiday season for you yet!

Yesterday we talked about taking care of our physical bodies and making good food choices.

Today let’s talk about our mental bodies. Your mind is one of the most important assets that you have. Think about it ~ it is the control center for your thoughts. Your mind is the steering wheel for your life. Where your mind goes, you tend to go also. How many times when you were growing up did you hear someone say: “Watch where you are going” as you almost walked into a stationary object? lol! Well the same can be said for your life and the holiday experience.

So strategy #6 is to feed your mind with positive thoughts. Find a funny movie, a good book, or take a walk. Another way to engage the mind, and promote positive family interaction is to play a game like cards, a treasure hunt, or charades. If you find yourself alone during the holiday season, take a moment now to pick up the phone and find a place to volunteer. There is a great deal of need this time of year. Bottom line is: “get moving!” If you mind is engaged you will be also.

Action Step for today: Think about where you are going this holiday season ~ where do you want to direct your mind? How can you increase the amount of positive focus you have now?

Deep Breath in! Cleansing Breath out! Say to yourself – simple strategies I put in place now will help me to walk in ease and grace, more centered, more balanced.I can do this!

Simple Strategies for Relieving Stress During the Holidays! #5

It’s the Holiday Season! Strategy #5

Oh boy here it comes ~ the holidays! It is 6 days until Thanksgiving and 36 days until Christmas!

We are on strategy day five for relieving stress during the holiday season. Strategy #5 is Eat Good Food!

Yesterday we talked about getting some rest and making sure we take time to recharge ourselves by resting the physical body. Missed that one? Here it is: Click here for Strategy #4

Today I would like to remind you that is important to put good fuel into our human bodies. The energy we allow in is the energy that will come out. Think of it this way. If you take your car down to the gas station and put sugar in the gas tank what would you expect your cars performance to be like? Not good ~ and no one would like the outcome that it brings. So think about what you are feeding your body ~ and eat to be your most energetic, focused, and happy self. Do the same for your family.

Although it is not my area of expertise, I have heard that introducing larges amounts of sugar into your diet can weaken the human immune system. This combine with the changing temperatures and cold weather have been known to cause not so happy results. So simple strategy #5 is eat good food.

Action Step for today: Eat in wisdom toward the health of your physical body. Educate yourself on what that means for you and your physical body.

Deep Breath in! Cleansing Breath out! Say to yourself – simple strategies I put in place now will help me to walk in ease and grace, more centered, more balanced.I can do this!
